THE LAND

AN UNTAMED NATURAL WILDERNESS
THE WEST COAST OF NEW ZEALAND

Moreton Jewellery Greenstone from the West Coast

The West Coast is New Zealand’s only source of greenstone (pounamu) with the boulders found in the West Coast rivers. The West Coast of New Zealand is mainly a green and lush wilderness, hundreds of hectares of mountains, hills and valleys covered with abundant vegetation. The rivers and beaches of the West Coast are famous for their wild waters and variety of bird, fish and wildlife.

A mecca for travellers, time slows down in the West Coast; whether being lashed by rain or warmed by sun, there is always another beautiful vista to see.

The whole stretch down the West Coast of the South Island is not ever more than 50 kilometres wide, and is home to only 31,000 people.
